Melbourne children, in an Oxbridge classroom

Melbourne schools teach English well. What they rarely have room for is the small tutorial: three to seven students, one motion, and every child expected to speak. That is the whole of what we do, and the time zone happens to suit Melbourne better than almost anywhere.

Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me — this is no exaggeration: you’re like an angel sent from above who rescued me from a sea of frustration and confusion.

Your child’s teacher lives here

Nina is based in Melbourne: a native English speaker with more than six years teaching children and teenagers, specialising in storytelling and public speaking, and soon taking the Cambridge Certificate in Cognitive Psychology. She teaches the classes rather than supervising them.

02

Evening classes, not the small hours

Melbourne runs two to three hours ahead of Hong Kong, so a Hong Kong after-school class lands in the Melbourne evening. Families here join without anyone getting up at dawn, which is not true of every city we serve.

03

Writing, speaking, thinking

Writing like a scholar, speaking like a leader, thinking independently. Eight of our secondary entrants reached the John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize shortlist, about double the rate across a hundred thousand entries, and others went from silent to the TED-Ed stage.

Questions from Melbourne parents

When do classes run for Melbourne students?

Melbourne is two to three hours ahead of Hong Kong depending on daylight saving, so our after-school Hong Kong classes fall in the Melbourne evening, and weekend groups sit comfortably in the day. The exact group is set after the interview.

Is the teacher actually in Australia?

Nina is based in Melbourne. Our other teachers are in Oxford and London, so a Melbourne child is taught by people across the English-speaking world rather than by one tutor in one city.

My child does well at school but hates speaking in front of people. Is this for them?

That is who this is for. In a class of three to seven, with discussion at the centre, there is nowhere to hide and no pressure to perform. Quieter children often end up the first to speak.
